SUMMARY:The science and politics of Critical Zone *** at 14:00 ***
DESCRIPTION:Jérôme Gaillardet\, Professor of geochemistry of the Earth’s surface processes\, Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris. \n\n\n\nFor online (live) attendance: https://live.epog.eu \n\n\n\nFor the replay: https://videos.epog.eu \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Critical Zone is the thin pellicle of the Earth’s surface that hosts life and societies. This is actually the human’s habitat. Named after a recent scientific initiative coming from Earth scientists\, the science of the critical zone aims at reconnecting disciplines of experimental and natural sciences and moving forward a more holistic approach. Critical Zone science is place-based and uses networks of instrumented field sites. The natural objects making the critical zone (soils\, rivers\, aquifers…) are also political entities offering a new perspective on how to invent a more sustainable relationship of humans with to the planet. \n\n\n\nArènes\, A.\, Latour\, B.\, & Gaillardet\, J. Over the past few decades\, ecology has developed concepts to describe the relationships between human activities and natural processes\, raising theoretical and practical issues. Two main concepts and their ethical implications will be presented in this session: “ecosystem services” and “nature-based solutions”. \n\n\n\nCostanza R.\, Arge R. (d’)\, Groot R. Our trade\, our food\, our biodiversity\, our climate\, our data rely at one point or another on the oceans. We observe a continuous increase of the maritime trade\, and at the same time some countries are willing to change the rules and deny others the right to sail\, drill\, lay date cables in the waters surrounding their coasts. Hence\, oceans are also the new theater of the great power competition as well the stage chosen by regional power to spread their aggressive wings. What are the main trends of the maritime competition? Who are the actors? What are their means?  What are the threats? Where international cooperation is working? \n\n\n\nHervé Coutau Bégarie (2008)\, “La nouvelle stratégie navale”\, Stratégique\, n°89–90.
